For those of you who don't know, Nintendo's launched a line recently called amiibo, they are essentially like Skylander toys, in that they're physical storage devices that can be used to unlock bonus content in the game, but Nintendo's made it clear they will be usable on a wide range of games( so far Mario Kart 8, Hyrule Warriors, and Super Smash Bros. for the WiiU support amiibo), for both the WiiU and the New 3DS( with the possibility of a special attachment for the 3DS, 3DS XL, and 2DS being released).
Nintendo's been financially unstable for a number of years, mainly due to the disappointing sales of the WiiU. So, not wanting to destabilize themselves further, the executives of the company seemed to agree that they should be sparing in their production, that way, if they didn't sell very well, they wouldn't have wasted possibly tens of millions of dollars. Sounds reasonable. The only problem is that the whole line of toys has sold around 1,000,000 units.
Now, it's good that Nintendo has managed to create a product with so much demand, but when one takes into account the culture of gaming, one of the cornerstones of which is for people to sell their merchandise online, it was only a matter of time before some individuals took advantage of the short stock of amiibo to spread rumors that some amiibo were going to be discontinued, causing the price of amiibo on sites such as eBay and Craigslist to skyrocket, with one selling for over $2,000.
Many massive retailers who carry amiibo, such as Toys R Us, have already stated that no amiibo are being discontinued, and that the reason some cannot be purchased is because of small stock.
It's this journalist's personal opinion that Nintendo should've stated as soon as they released such a small number of amiibo that more would be on the way.
But I'm curious to know what you think. Comment your thoughts below or shoot us a tweet: @nintendo3dsnew
